You Are Always In Season!: Gain Confidence With Color

by Olivia Warren

At PBMisty, the opportunity to meet and work with amazing people with unique careers constantly arises. Most recently, Kristen Pike (@kpcolorgirl on Instagram), a Color Analysis Consultant in the DFW area, stopped by and collaborated on a creative photoshoot (- stay tuned to read more about these). Kristen had her pictures taken at the studio to showcase her profession, model for Misty, and acquire social media content.

Misty had shared a story prior of a friend who will be called B, who always looks put together. B has had a color analysis and has since never strayed from her palette, which always makes for a cohesive and phenomenal look. Misty wanted to feel like B - always ready to make an appearance! Having a color analysis consultation is also a wonderful way to embrace individuality - accentuating natural features by choosing to wear shades that enhance them.

While the team is certainly more educated on the power of color and how it attracts or or depletes complexions, advising people of what colors to wear for their branding photography session or their headshot photoshoot is siply not that easy. What we do know, however, is that getting a color analysis is the gift that you keep giving yourself.

"In the meantime," Misty said. "We'll keep telling people to bring some options for their individualized photography sessions. Stick with those colors that people compliment you when you wear them."

It was so intriguing learning all about color analysis during the creative photoshoot. Misty scheduled for team members interested in utilizing Kristen’s services to schedule sessions on the same day. Misty hoped that the diversity of the PBMisty team would provide insider information on how to better assist a wide variety of clients in color theory - whether planning an outfit for headshots, makeup tips, or even choosing a backdrop! Every piece of knowledge is helpful to ensure photographic excellence.

On January 11th, Misty and three other team members (Lauren, KK, and myself) met at Kristen’s home studio in Dallas to complete a color analysis. Funnily enough, no one ended up leaving with the same choices! A blog on each person’s individual experience and color palette will be soon to follow - stay tuned on the website to read these and learn more.

Kristen did an amazing job at explaining each segment of the color analysis session and any questions that arose during. For starters, there are four seasons: Winter = Cool, Spring = Warm, Summer = Cool and Autumn = Warm. These seasons can then be broken down into four subcategories: Pure, Tinted/Soft Light, Toned/Dark Light, and Shaded. In total, KP is certified in 16 Season Color Analysis. This means clients who undergo this service are assigned a more specific palette than typically discussed online.

Before the consultation, each person meeting at Kristen’s was asked to wear a white t-shirt and no makeup. This provides the most true representation of one’s complexion and operates as a blank slate for KP to work with. If someone had dyed their hair, a white covering was placed over top to help further focus on natural features.

Each color palette was closely examined next to each skin tone and discussed in-depth as to why some colors worked better than others. It was incredible to witness how certain shades pulled out gray or blue tones and discoloration on one’s face, while others chiseled the jaw and brightened the skin. Kristen was wonderful at explaining the why behind everything and pointing out particular reasons a seasoned palette was complimentary or not.

Each season is created by altering the undertones of a true neutral color palette, and it was marvelous to witness how two seemingly identical colors at first glance were different upon closer examination. Misty was particularly struck by two shades of red - they appeared similar at first, but Kristen was able to point out how they varied. In conclusion, Misty’s shade of red from her assigned palette may appear to be Lauren’s assigned shade of red, but Misty’s red was not complimentary to Lauren and vice versa. Does that make sense?

Once assigned a season and color palette, Kristen provided corresponding swatches, makeup recommendations, outfit ideas, hair colors, and more. This is meant to act as a guide for the future; to use as a reference when shopping or styling complementary looks. Bonus!

Though it seemed like a lot of information or trial and error at first, KP did a flawless job of ensuring everyone felt welcome, taken care of, and understood each aspect of the process. Everything learned was valuable and will be implemented both in the studio and in the PBMisty team’s closets. Color us impressed!

"I now feel empowered, " Misty said. "Other than  I knew my husband has always liked me in red, and strangers would compliment me when I wore aqua, I was fairly clueless. Bright aqua and true red are two of my 29 colors. Hey, that's a lot to choose from and it makes shopping a heck of a lot easy - and less expensive."

Reach out to the PBMisty team on the website. Interested in both? After all, color analysis is complementary to photography.
