5 Low-Tech Marketing Ideas for Your Small Business

You’ve probably already read all about online marketing tips and trends to promote a business, but have you considered offline advertising to reach a more local audience? Marketing techniques from the past can still be as effective today as they were before the advent of the internet. So today, we’ll look at five forgotten options to advertise your business, presented by Photography by Misty.

Host an Event

Are you opening a new brick-and-mortar store or launching a new product? Consider hosting a special event to celebrate the occasion and bring people from around the community to your place of business. Come up with a catchy slogan for your event, and get it printed on banners and merchandise you can give away or raffle off, such as T-shirts, pens, and notepads. Reach out to your local radio station to advertise your event, and post an ad in the local newspaper with the time, date, and the best way to contact you for more information. Promote your event on your website and social media channels, posting videos along with the date and location for added visibility.

Put up Yard Signs

We usually see them pop up on our neighbors' front lawns before elections, but yard signs can also be displayed to promote a business or a special event. To make it an effective marketing tool, your yard sign needs to convey a clear message with a simple call to action. When placing signs to promote your business around your community, make sure you get permission from the property owners and follow the guidelines and laws in effect in your state and locality. You can track how your yard signs are performing by checking how many leads and phone calls you receive from a particular area. This will allow you to pinpoint who and where your target audience is.

Send Postcards

Remind your clients of an upcoming appointment or keep your customers informed of a sale on your products by mailing cards or postcards to their home or business address. Ensure important information is clearly visible and legible, and don’t forget to include your contact information and your web address. Come up with an eye-catching design for the front of the card, and use the same design to add a banner to your website. And if hiring a graphic designer isn’t in your marketing budget, you can do it yourself online for free! Keeping your colors, fonts, wording, and images consistent across all your advertising materials and content, be they online or offline, will help increase brand awareness and make you stand out among your competitors.

Go Door to Door

There’s no question how effective online marketing can be, but there’s still a lot to be said for a good, old-fashioned handshake. So try going door-to-door to greet potential customers face-to-face. This can be especially effective if you live in an area with a high walk score, where people often run errands by foot. Keep your interaction brief, respectful, and light-hearted. If possible, have a brightly-colored brochure or business card to hand out.

Sponsor a Team or Event

Promote your business and make a positive impact in your community by sponsoring a Little League team, a 5k race, or a neighborhood beautification day. To figure out what kind of sponsorship will get you the most bang for your buck, start by researching who your target audience is. Once you know what demographics are most likely to buy your products or services, find local events looking for sponsors who will be likely to attract the same crowds. Make yourself visible at local events by having a physical presence such as a booth, by displaying signs and banners, or by having your company logo printed on a team’s jerseys.

Old-timey marketing can still bring big returns if you know who your target audience is. Promote your business locally with printed materials, and get engaged in your community via sponsorships and partnerships. And don’t forget to keep your offline and online branding consistent to build brand recognition!

Misty - Thank you for reading and commenting. Yes, we have hosted events, sent postcards (oftentimes with goodies) and sponsored events (without giving our services away).

Cassandra - I especially liked the tip about sponsoring local events - it's a great opportunity for businesses to show social responsibility and build brand awareness at the same time, and I think this approach goes well with a platform like Dubai Villa, which always provides unique options for premium investments. Have you personally used any of these methods to develop your own business?
